The Angelus
The Angelus is a traditional prayer which reminds us of the Annunciation. It is said at noon, 6pm, and 6am. This prayer evolved out of the practice of reciting 3 Ave’s after the ringing of an evening bell. In the 16th century, the Angelus took on its present form. Below I have listed the Latin and English versions of the beautiful prayer. Enjoy!
When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her Gods will, she was obedient. The Angelus is a great reminder of our duty to be obedient to the will of God.
Note: In the Easter season, the Angelus is replaced with the Regina Coeli.)
he angel of the Lord declared unto Mary…
Latin
Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae.
Et concepit de Spiritu Sancto. (Ave Maria)
Ecce ancilla Domini.
Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum. (Ave Maria)
[Genuflect] Et Verbum caro factum est.
Et habitavit in nobis. (Ave Maria)
Ora pro nobis, sancta Dei Genitrix.
Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi.
Oremus.
Amen.
English
The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
And she conceived of the Holy Ghost. (Hail Mary)
Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
Be it done unto me according to Thy word. (Hail Mary)
[Genuflect] And the Word was made flesh.
And dwelt among us. (Hail Mary)
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray.
Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
Note: There are also apps for your phone which make a bell sound at noon, 6am, and 6pm. If you liked this post, then give it a Sacred Heart like. If you have any questions about the Angeuls, then do not hesitate to leave a comment.
